Description

LCD Digital Magnetic Stirrer with Electric Heating Mantle (MS‑H280‑B250)

PRIMARY CLINICAL & DIAGNOSTIC USES

1. Modular Heating Mantle Design for Medium‑Volume Clinical Sample Processing (250 mL)
Primary Use: Provides a modular LCD digital heating magnetic stirrer with a dedicated 250 mL beaker heating mantle (inner diameter 72.75 mm) that precisely fits standard 250 mL borosilicate beakers or round‑bottom flasks (interchangeable with optional 100 mL, 500 mL, and 1000 mL mantles for both beakers and round‑bottom flasks). Used for the precise and reproducible heating and stirring of medium‑volume clinical samples, reagents, and biological specimens in clinical diagnostics, pharmaceutical research, and analytical laboratories. It features a maximum stirring capacity of 20 liters (water) on its Ø135 mm ceramic‑coated aluminium work plate (when the mantle is detached), a speed range of 200 to 1500 rpm (±20 rpm), heating from room temperature to 280 °C in 1 °C increments, and an LCD digital display showing set and actual values for both temperature and speed.
How it helps: For the clinical laboratory scientist and pharmaceutical chemist, the 250 mL heating mantle capacity fills a critical gap between small‑scale (100 mL) and large‑scale (500 mL/1000 mL) processing. The interchangeable heating mantle design allows the same instrument to be used for processing a 250 mL round‑bottom flask of patient tissue digest or for melting 250 mL of agarose gel, then instantly reconfigured for stirring a 1‑litre beaker of buffer at room temperature – replacing multiple single‑purpose devices and maximising bench space. The precise 72.75 mm inner diameter ensures a snug, form‑fitting contact with the 250 mL vessel, maximising heat transfer efficiency. The high‑quality aluminium‑silicate (ceramic) wool liner provides excellent thermal insulation, ensuring uniform heat distribution without localised hot spots. The unit also can be run as two independent devices – one heating, one stirring – dramatically improving instrument utilisation in lean diagnostic laboratories. For the patient, the reproducibility and temperature uniformity of the platform ensure consistent conditions for critical medium‑volume diagnostic sample preparation, supporting accurate test results and the safe, efficient development of new pharmaceutical compounds.
2. High‑Precision Medium‑Volume Temperature Control for Trace Element Digestion and Sample Preparation
Primary Use: Used for the controlled digestion of patient serum, whole blood, urine, and tissue homogenates in strong acids at temperatures up to 280 °C, prior to trace element analysis by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP‑MS). The built‑in temperature self‑calibration function and PT1000 external temperature sensor port (±0.2 °C accuracy) enable precise closed‑loop control of the actual sample temperature.
How it helps: For the trace element analyst processing medium‑volume patient samples, the 250 mL capacity is ideal for running duplicate or triplicate digests of clinical specimens (e.g., 2–3 blood lead samples in a single run). The PT1000 external temperature sensor (included with the package) enables the instrument to regulate the actual temperature of the acid digest directly (±0.2 °C) , ensuring complete, uniform oxidation of organic matrices even in demanding applications such as blood lead, urine cadmium, and kidney stone panel analysis. The external sensor ensures that heating continues until the actual sample reaches the set point, while the two independent safety circuits continuously monitor sensor status, automatically stopping heating and reporting an error code if any sensor failure is detected. For the patient undergoing heavy metal screening (e.g., lead, mercury, cadmium) or nutritional deficiency monitoring (zinc, copper, selenium), the superior temperature uniformity and consistent digestion achieved with the MS‑H280‑B250 result in accurate and reliable clinical measurements, free from matrix interference.
3. Gel Electrophoresis, Buffer Preparation, and Clinical Microbiology Media Melting
Primary Use: Enables the safe, uniform heating and melting of solid or semi‑solid culture media (250 mL), agarose gels, and agars directly in 250 mL beakers or round‑bottom flasks, and the preparation of temperature‑sensitive standard solutions and buffers for molecular diagnostics and clinical microbiology workflows. The heating mantle holds the vessel firmly, allowing the top half of the flask to remain visible during operation for easy observation.
How it helps: For the clinical molecular biologist and microbiology technologist working with medium‑volume gels and media (e.g., preparing 20–30 standard agarose gels or 50–100 culture plates in a single batch), the 250 mL heating mantle capacity is optimal for routine laboratory batches without the waste of oversized equipment. The glass‑fibre and aluminium‑silicate wool inner sleeve provides 500 °C thermal resistance and superior heat retention, allowing agarose and solid media to melt evenly without localised scorching. The auto‑reverse stirring function (programmable via the LCD panel) helps dissolve and homogenise media ingredients thoroughly. The three‑step timer (1 min–99 h 59 min) delivers a buzzer alert on completion, while the safety lock parameter‑locking function prevents unintended changes to operating conditions. For the patient, correctly prepared electrophoresis gels and sterile, homogeneous media lead to reproducible identification of pathogens in clinical samples and reliable molecular diagnostic band patterns, enabling effective, timely treatment.
4. Dual‑Mode Versatility for Clinical Microbiology and Quality Control Laboratories
Primary Use: The instrument can be used in two independent modes: as a complete heating and stirring unit (when the mantle is attached) or as a stirring‑only unit on its 20‑litre capacity ceramic‑coated work plate (when the mantle is detached). The heat‑only and stir‑only functions can be run simultaneously for two different tasks.
How it helps: For the clinical microbiology technologist and quality control manager, the ability to run a 250 mL beaker digest on the heating mantle while simultaneously stirring a 5‑litre beaker of phosphate‑buffered saline on the work plate dramatically improves laboratory productivity. This two‑in‑one design eliminates the need for two separate instruments, freeing up valuable bench space and reducing equipment acquisition costs. The dual‑mode functionality also supports flexible workflow planning: a single instrument can process a 250 mL batch of culture media for an entire week’s testing schedule, then be reconfigured for 1‑litre stirring tasks between batch runs. The independent 420 °C over‑temperature protection and residual heat warning system (flashing “HOT” on the LCD even after power‑off) ensure safe operation regardless of which mode is in use. For the patient, this streamlined, standardised processing reduces procedural errors across high‑volume sample runs and supports faster diagnostic turnaround times.

5. STORAGE & HANDLING ATTRIBUTES

  • Storage: Store the instrument in a clean, dry, dust‑free environment at room temperature (15–30 °C) when not in use. Allow the unit to cool completely (verify “HOT” indicator is off) before storage. The heating mantle should be stored in a dry, clean environment to prevent moisture ingress into the fibre insulation.
  • Installation: Place the instrument on a stable, level, non‑flammable, heat‑resistant laboratory benchtop away from flammable materials, volatile solvents, combustible gases, or paper products. Allow at least 10 cm clearance on all sides for heat dissipation. Do not use near water baths or sinks where splashing may occur.
  • Cleaning: Unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely before cleaning. Wipe the ceramic‑coated work plate, the metal housing, and the outer surface of the heating mantle with a soft, damp cloth or sponge using a mild laboratory detergent or 70 % isopropyl alcohol. For stubborn residues inside the heating mantle, use a non‑abrasive cleaner suitable for glass‑fibre surfaces. Do not immerse the unit in liquid. Do not use abrasive cleaners or metal‑scouring pads. Do not saturate the fibre insulation inside the heating mantle with liquid.
  • Pre‑use inspection: Before each use, inspect the power cord and plug for any damage. Ensure the heating mantle is free of cracks and foreign objects. Verify that the correct heating mantle size (250 mL) is fitted for the beaker being used. Check that the beaker is dry, free of cracks, and properly seated in the mantle for maximum surface contact.
  • Beaker selection for heating mantle: Use only standard 250 mL beakers (or round‑bottom flasks for F‑series mantles) made of borosilicate glass (e.g., Pyrex or Kimax) designed to withstand the operating temperature up to 280 °C. Do not use cracked or damaged glassware. The 72.75 mm inner diameter of the 250 mL beaker mantle is specifically designed for a snug, secure fit.
  • Operation with external sensor: Insert the PT1000 temperature sensor probe into the sample vessel and secure it with the stand clamp. Do not allow the sensor wire to contact the hot heating mantle, as this may melt the insulation and cause sensor failure or an electrical hazard.
  • Attaching and removing heating mantles: Ensure the driving unit is turned off and cool. The interchangeable mantle attaches via a dedicated connector. Fit the mantle firmly onto the work plate and lock it according to the manufacturer's instructions. To remove after use, allow the mantle to cool completely (“HOT” indicator off) before disconnecting.
  • Independent dual‑purpose operation: To run the instrument as two separate devices (one heating on the mantle, one stirring on the base work plate), follow the manufacturer's configuration instructions in the user manual. This dual‑mode functionality dramatically increases laboratory productivity.
  • Temperature self‑calibration: To perform a self‑calibration, follow the manufacturer's procedure using a calibrated reference thermometer. This adjusts the internal offset to correct for minor temperature deviations and maintain measurement accuracy over time.
  • Timer operation: Program the timer for the desired heating and stirring duration. When the timer reaches zero, the unit stops heating but continues stirring (if stirring was enabled), and the buzzer sounds. Press any button to silence the buzzer.
  • Cooling down: After use, turn off the power and allow the heating mantle to cool completely until the “HOT” indicator stops flashing (typically 30–60 minutes, depending on operating temperature) before cleaning, moving, storing, or changing the mantle.
  • Periodic verification: Verify temperature accuracy periodically using a calibrated external thermometer. If deviation exceeds specifications (±1 °C <100 °C or ±1 % >100 °C), perform a temperature self‑calibration routine or consult the manufacturer's service guidelines for recalibration.

6. LABORATORY & CLINICAL APPLICATIONS

  • Primary Application: General‑purpose heating and stirring for medium‑volume clinical diagnostics (trace element digestion for heavy metal testing – e.g., blood lead, urine cadmium, heavy metals), pharmaceutical quality control (dissolution testing, small‑batch buffer preparation), analytical chemistry (reflux, distillation), and research laboratories where the ability to heat both round‑bottom flasks and flat‑bottom beakers in a single versatile platform is required.
  • Clinical Role: A versatile and essential instrument for hospital and clinical chemistry laboratories, molecular diagnostics labs, pharmaceutical R&D and quality control, analytical chemistry departments, environmental testing stations, and research institutions. Critical for sample digestion for trace element analysis, agarose gel preparation (in batches of 20–30 gels), culture media preparation (in 250 mL batch sizes), and small‑volume dissolution testing where precise, safe, and versatile heating with stirring is mandatory for diagnostic accuracy and patient safety.
SAFETY HANDLING PRECAUTIONS

1. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

  • Burn Hazard: The heating mantle can reach 280 °C and remains hot for an extended period after the power is turned off. Do not touch the heating mantle or metal housing for at least 30–60 minutes after use, or until the residual heat “HOT” indicator stops flashing. Use appropriate heat‑resistant gloves or tools when handling glassware that has been in contact with the heating mantle. Severe burns can occur upon contact.
  • Fire Hazard: Do not operate the instrument near flammable materials, volatile solvents, combustible gases, or paper products. Keep the work area clear of flammable substances. The heating temperature must be set at least 50 °C lower than the ignition point of the chemicals being used. Do not leave the instrument unattended while operating at high temperatures without appropriate safety protocols.
  • Electrical Safety: Do not operate the instrument with wet hands. Disconnect the power cord before cleaning, servicing, or changing heating mantles. Use only the supplied grounded power cord and ensure the outlet provides proper grounding. Do not operate if the power cord is damaged. Ensure that the main power supply cable does not touch the hot heating mantle during operation.
  • Beaker Position Safety: Always ensure the 250 mL beaker or round‑bottom flask is fully and correctly seated in the heating mantle before turning on the heating function. The flask‑sensing safety system will stop heating if it detects that the vessel is out of position, but this should not be relied upon as the primary safety measure.
  • Chemical Compatibility: The glass‑fibre inner sleeve of the heating mantle and the ceramic‑coated work plate are chemically resistant, but always refer to the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for specific chemicals to confirm compatibility and to understand any hazards from vapours, fumes, or residues produced when the material is heated.
  • Heating Mantle Contamination: If the inner glass‑fibre chamber of the heating mantle becomes contaminated with chemical spills, do not attempt to clean it. Once the insulation is saturated, the contamination cannot be removed, and the whole mantle may need replacement.
  • Vessel Selection: Use only 250 mL borosilicate glass beakers or round‑bottom flasks. Do not use cracked, damaged, or non‑borosilicate glassware. Ensure the beaker is dry and free of cracks before inserting into the heating mantle.
  • Thermal Shock: Do not place a cold beaker directly into a pre‑heated heating mantle, as thermal shock may cause the glass to crack or shatter. Allow the beaker and heating mantle to heat up together gradually. The high‑temperature glass‑fibre liner reaches temperature quickly; allow the beaker to warm slowly.
  • Changing Mantles: Only change heating mantles when the unit is powered off and the mantle has cooled completely to below 50 °C (verify on the display). Use appropriate hand protection to avoid burns from residual heat in the metal housing.
  • Ventilation and Clearance: The unit requires adequate clearance (at least 10 cm from walls and other equipment) for proper heat dissipation and ventilation. Do not cover the instrument. Ensure the instrument is installed on a stable, level, and temperature‑resistant surface free from explosive or hazardous substances.
  • Training Requirement: Only trained laboratory personnel with appropriate technical background in hot plate stirrer operation, heating mantle handling, and the specific hazards of heating chemicals and biological samples should operate the MS‑H280‑B250 for clinical diagnostic or research applications. Users must read and understand the operator's manual before the first use and follow all laboratory safety protocols.

2. FIRST AID MEASURES

  • Burn from Hot Surface: If skin contacts the hot heating mantle, work plate, or metal housing, immediately cool the burn area with cool (not cold) running water for at least 15 minutes. Do not apply ice directly to the burn. Remove any jewellery or constrictive items from the affected area. Cover the burn with a sterile, non‑adhesive dressing. Seek medical attention for large‑area burns (larger than the palm of the hand), deep burns (white or charred appearance), or burns causing blistering. For burns on the face, hands, feet, or genitals, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Fire: If a fire occurs on or near the instrument, immediately turn off the power if safe to do so. Use a class ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher or carbon dioxide (CO₂) extinguisher. Do not use water on electrical fires. Evacuate the immediate area if the fire cannot be immediately controlled. Call emergency services.
  • Chemical Splash to Eyes: If a heated chemical sample or reagent splashes into the eyes, immediately flush the eyes with copious amounts of cool water or sterile saline for at least 15 minutes. Hold the eyelids open to ensure thorough rinsing. Remove contact lenses if present and easily removable. Seek immediate medical attention. Do not attempt to neutralise the chemical in the eye.
  • Chemical Splash to Skin: Remove contaminated clothing immediately. Flush the affected skin area with cool running water for at least 15 minutes. Do not rub or scrub. Seek medical evaluation for chemical burns or if irritation persists. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the specific chemical involved.
  • Inhalation of Fumes: If fumes from heated chemicals are inhaled, move the affected person to fresh air immediately. Keep the person warm and at rest. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen if trained. If breathing stops, perform CPR. Seek immediate medical attention.
  • Electrical Shock: If an electrical shock incident occurs, disconnect power at the circuit breaker before attempting to assist the victim. Do not touch the victim until the power is disconnected. Once safe, assess the victim for responsiveness and breathing. Call emergency medical services immediately. Perform CPR if trained and necessary. Seek medical evaluation for all electrical shock victims, even if symptoms appear mild.

3. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

  • Flammability: The instrument's fire‑resistant metal housing is non‑flammable, but the power cord, internal wiring, electronic components, and plastic control elements are combustible. The glass‑fibre inner sleeve of the heating mantle is non‑flammable. The primary fire hazard is the flammable chemicals, solvents, or materials being heated in the beaker.
  • Extinguishing Media: Use carbon dioxide (CO₂), dry chemical (ABC class), or alcohol‑resistant foam extinguishers for fires involving the electrical components or nearby flammable materials. Do not use water on electrical fires, as water conducts electricity and can cause electrical shock or damage the instrument.
  • Fire Response: Immediately disconnect power to the instrument at the circuit breaker if safe to do so. Evacuate the immediate area. Use an appropriate fire extinguisher for small, contained fires. For larger fires, evacuate the laboratory and call emergency services. Do not attempt to extinguish a fire if not trained or if the fire is spreading rapidly.
  • Special Protective Equipment for Firefighters: Firefighters should wear self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and full structural firefighting gear (including gloves, boots, helmet, and turnout coat) when fighting fires in laboratory settings, as combustion products may include toxic fumes from burning plastics, chemicals, and electrical components.
